I recently returned from a quick 2 day retreat to the New Mexico Desert. If you are looking for larger then life quiet and peaceful tranquility, then look nor further then the Monastery ,http://www.christdesert.org/ , a monastery in the ancient Benedictine tradition. THe road, once you turn off highway 84, is a long, winding and at times, treacherously narrow 13 mile road the ends at the monastery. Most of the land and road is owned and maintained by the forest service, outside of Abiquiú.
The stars at night a a panorma, clear and breath taking in their quiet glory. You can spend part of the day exploring, praying and even working if you want, there is plenty to do.
